Version 2002 Updates
Animation - PPT 2002
There are several ways to create an animation in PowerPoint 2002. These choices include:
a. Slide transitions - changing from one slide to the next.
b. Animation schemes - these are directional effects similar to transitions and are usually created with one-click.
c. Custom animation - enables more sophisticated animation options such as order and timing of multiple objects on one slide.
d. Action settings - enable you to attach a mouse action to an object. This is different than an animation because it performs an action rather than defines how to introduce directionally an object or slide. This will be covered in a later lesson.
e. Action buttons - enable you to attach an action to a specific button. This will also be covered in a later lesson.

Animation Schemes

Animation schemes allow you to apply preset animations to the text on selected slides. Preset Animation Schemes give you one-click access to professionally designed animations, which are divided into three categories: Subtle, Moderate, and Exciting. See Example.

  Applying a Preset Animation Scheme

1. Click on the slide you want to animate. You do not need to select the actual text box. These animations apply to all the text on the chosen slide.
2. Click on Slide Show in the menu commands and then click Animation Schemes or click on the down arrow in the Task Pane and select Slide Design - Animation Schemes from the drop-down menu. In the Slide Design task pane, under the Apply to selected slides, click on an animation scheme from the list. The list of animations includes those Recently Used animation schemes first and then divides the remaining by category, such as Subtle, Moderate and Exciting. Choose an animation that best fits your needs.
3. To preview it, click on the Play button at the bottom of the task Pane.
4. To start the slide show, click on Slide Show button.
5. To apply the scheme to all the slides, click on Apply to All Slides button.

If you decide you don’t want a particular scheme, choose No Animation option in the Apply to Selected Slides list in the Slide Design - Animation Schemes task pane.

NOTE: Don’t use too many different animation schemes in your presentation. It is distracting to the audience and interferes with your information. Also make sure the animation that you use for an object or box of text isn’t distracting of the content of your show. The last thing you want your audience to remember is the animations and not your information.

Creating Custom Animations

The Custom Animation task pane offers more advanced animation options, such as animating certain parts of a slide, or setting order and timings. This task pane is also used to set animation effects for charts, diagrams, charts and media clips. Applying a custom animation is more complicated than applying a preset animation.

1. Select an object or text box on a slide.
2. Choose Slide Show, Custom Animation from the menu bar to open the Custom Animation task pane or right click on the object and select Custom Animation from the dropdown menu. If a task pane is already open, click the down arrow on task pane and choose Custom Animation. The Custom Animation task pane should appear.
3. In the Custom Animation Task Pane, the Add Effects box will be activated and highlighted. Click on this dropdown box to reveal the following four choices with each one having additional multiple choices. Highlight the following choices to see possible selections. Not all options will be available all the time as it depends on what you are animating. For example, text animations are only available if you animate text.
a. Entrance - to add animation effect when text or object enters the slide show presentation.
b. Emphasis - to add animation effect to individually selected text or object that is already on the slide.
c. Exit - to add animation effect to selected object or text when it leaves the slide.
d. Motion Paths - sets a directional path that the selected text or object follows.

Highlight the choice you want and release the mouse button to activate the animation.

Click on More Effects in each dropdown menu to see a dialog box with a complete list of additonal effects. If you want to use one of these effects, click on it and then click OK to close the dialog box.

4. From the Start drop-down list, choose when you want the animation to start. These include On Click, With Previous, and After Previous.
5. Depending on which custom animation you choose, additional drop-down lists might appear, such as Direction, Speed, Font, Duration, and so forth. Select which options you prefer.
6. Click the Play button to demonstrate the selected transitions within your current view and click Slide Show to display the animations in a show.

Animation List in Custom Animation task pane

Each animation event you add appears in the Custom Animation list in the order you enter it. This box is located about half way down on the Custom Animation task pane.

In this list, when something is animated, there are several icons or some text going from left to right on the line. These include:

a.

A number (corresponds to number attached to the object or text on slide - see image to the right). The numbers that appear on the slide wil not print or show during a slide show.

b. Icon of either computer mouse or clock (tells whether animation is to proceed on mouse click or automatically)
c. Icon of moving star (corresponds to the choice from the Add Effects menu)
d. A text description or the actual text of what is being animated.
e. Sometimes there will be down arrows that when clicked on will display additional animation effects for that particulart object or text.

  Setting Additional Effects

To add effects to an animation event, click on the down arrow to the right of an animation in the list (in the Custom Animation task pane) and choose Effect Options from the menu that appears. The Effects Dialog box will open with the Effect tab selected.

The name and content of the dialog box will depend on the animation that you have used. For this example, the box is labeled Blinds as that is the animation effect that is assigned to the text on the slide. The three tabs at the top of this dialog box will remain the same though. The three tabs of the Effects Dialog Box include: Effect, Timing, and Text Animation.

Effects tab - choose the effects you wish to apply in addition to the basic animation you have already selected. This tab contains the choices for how to display an object or text After Animation. If you have a bulleted list and wish to have the text dim after each line, this is where you specify what color the text will become. Remember, the choices in this tab will differ depending on the animation selected.

Timing tab - Timing tab lets you set the start time, slide delay, speed of the slides appearing, repeating the animation, rewinding when done playing, and triggers. Check out the Help menu to find out more about Triggers and the Advanced Timeline option.

Text Animation tab - This tab lets you set the animation of the text by 1st to 5th level indent. This will be how your bulleted text lines come onto the screen.

There are also tabs for Chart Animation, Diagram Animations and Media Clips. Look in the Help menu to see how these work.

  Reordering Animations

To change the order that objects and text animate onto a page, select the object or text you want to change the order of and click either the up or down Re-Order buttons in the bottom of the Custom Animation task pane.

Or simply drag an animation to another location in the list.

  Modifying Animations

If you want to modify an animation, select the animation in the Custom Animation list and click the Change Button (at the top of the Custom Animation task page) and then select a new animation. The Change button is in the same place and will replace the Add Effect button. The name changes when you need to modify an existing animation.

  Deleting Animations

To delete a custom animation, select it in the list in the Custom Animation task pane and click the Remove button at the top of the Task Pane. To delete all animations in the list, select the first animation, press the Shift key and hold it down, and then select the last animation in the list. All animations should be selected now. Now click the Remove button.

Slide Transitions PPT 2002

Choosing Slide Transitions opens the Slide Transition Task pane. Select the slide(s) you want the transition applied to and then choose the transition from the list in the Task Pane.

When you click on a choice, the slide will preview the transition so you can see what the transition will look like. This will happen as long as the auto Preview button is checked. This button is located at the bottom of the Slide Transitions task pane.

You can choose Slide Transitions in either the Normal view or the Slide Sorter view. With a slide or slides selected, clicking on a transition will apply that animation to the selected slides. If you want to apply the transition to all the slides in the show, choose an transition and then click on Apply to All Slides at the bottom of the Task pane.

Choose a transition speed of Slow, Medium, or Fast, depending on how fast you want the transition to occur in the slideshow.
Choose a sound from the Sound drop-down list if you want to add sound to the transition.
Select On Mouse Click to advance the slides with a mouse click. Enter a number in the Automatically after box and check the the box in front of this to have PowerPoint automatically change to the next slide without a mouse click.
Click the Play button to preview the transitions.
